Smokey Air Cancels Fun on The Water at Franklin Pool
Smokey conditions make the air quality poor in the Yakima area so the city is temporarily closing the cities' Franklin Pool. The pool at Franklin Park on Tieton Drive is closed Monday and possibly Tuesday because of unhealthy air quality caused by smoke from wildfires in the region.
It happens every year in the state. In fact on Sunday air quality alerts were issued in many areas throughout the west because of wildfires burning in Washington State and in Oregon. The unhealthy air alerts were issued for parts of Colorado, Wyoming, Washington state and Idaho.
Many people with breathing problems are doing everything they can to avoid being outside.
Yakima city officials say "the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) cautions that sensitive groups should avoid prolonged or heavy exertion outdoors and the general public should reduce prolonged or heavy exertion outdoors when air quality is unhealthy."
That prolonged outdoor activity is considered intermittent for several hours that makes you breathe slightly harder than normal, such as yard work. Heavy exertion is considered intense outdoor activities that cause you to breathe hard, such as jogging.
Forecasts call for the area’s air quality to improve on Wednesday, August 4th.
