Yakima Police officers are now wearing masks to protect themselves and others during the COVID-19 pandemic. Police Chief Matt Murray has ordered officers to wear the masks but only when outside of patrol cars. Last week the department asked people who call police to their home or business to speak to officers outside so they aren't exposed to the virus. Police haven't said if any officers in the department have been diagnosed with COVID-19.
The department is doing all it can to make sure officers aren't exposed as they do their job.
KIT News was unable to reach Yakima County Sheriff Bob Udell to see if he's requiring deputies to wear masks.
