Are You Masking Indoors Yakima? Case Counts on The Rise
Governor Jay Inslee has tested positive for COVID-19 as case counts in the state are starting to see an uptick. State health officials on Wednesday didn't mandate but urged people to wear masks indoors and in crowded settings. In Yakima County there have been 220 new cases of COVID-19 since May 13 that's up from 139 cases reported the week before. A majority of the cases are in people ages 40 plus in Yakima County. 6 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19. The rate of infection is currently at 139 cases per 100,000.
The current rate of infection is much different then the past in Yakima
During the height of the pandemic the rate of infection was 500 to 700 cases per 100,000. The Seattle Times says in early May "the state recorded a seven-day infection rate of about 245.3 cases per 100,000 people, or about 2,600 new infections per day. In mid-March, Washington’s infection rate was about 40.4 cases per 100,000."
With the upcoming Memorial Day Weekend local and state health officials are concerned about a rise in cases after the holiday. But while low case counts in Yakima are increasing there's no concern about an increase in hospital admissions in Yakima County or the state and no major spike in deaths statewide or locally.
The Governor is now working at home with mild symptoms
Governor Jay Inslee has COVID-19. He's recovering at home.
The Associated Press reports "Inslee, who aggressively pushed for mitigation measures like indoor masking and restrictions on public gatherings early in the pandemic, is fully vaccinated, including two booster shots." “I hope others consider getting their booster because it’s very effective in preventing serious illness," Inslee said in a statement.
