The statewide mask directive starts Friday when every state resident is required to wear a face covering in an indoor public space, or in an outside public space when unable to physically distance from others. Specifically in Yakima County businesses won't be able to serve people who aren't wearing a mask.
There are exemptions.
Those who have certain medical conditions and kids under two are exempted. Facial coverings aren't needed under some conditions including while outdoors in public areas with social distancing, while eating or drinking at a restaurant and while communicating with a person who is deaf or hard of hearing.
The governor says the mask mandate will stay in place until COVID-19 numbers drop or until a vaccine is available.
