Yakima Firefighters Enjoying an Apple a Day
Everyone loves an apple and thanks to some local growers local firefighters are eating apples as part of a program called Apples for Firefighters. Alan Taylor of Taylor Ann Enterprises L.L.C. who is coordinating the program for a second year says the idea came from his son who was named Firefighter of the Year in 2020 with the East Valley Fire District. In the first year Taylor provided fresh apples for East Valley and West Valley Fire Departments but this year the program has expanded allowing more firefighters to enjoy a Washington State apple.
The program is now allowing more firefighters to enjoy local apples
Apples are now being delivered to East Valley District 4 and West Valley District 12 and Selah Fire Station with additional cartons going to six other stations including Wapato and Toppenish. Taylor says the plan is to "have apples available to all local fire districts next season but as a test now there are two being supplied. This also matches the currently donated apples amounting to two cartons of extra fancy fruit to each district."
The program is supported by local businesses and growers
Taylor says the fruit this year is from Starr Ranch Growers in Wenatchee but connected here to Gilbert Orchards, Columbia Reach and Stadelman Fruit.
He says program wouldn’t be possible without additional support from Yakima Federal Savings & Loan Association, Steins Ace Hardware, Michelsen Packaging, Farmers Insurance, and Country Financial.
