A 21-year-old Yakima man was injured Sunday after being shot by police following a low-speed chase in downtown Yakima. Yakima Police Capt. Jay Seely says police were first called to the 1200 block of South Ninth Avenue at about 10:45 am Sunday for a report of a man with a shotgun and a report he'd fired at a home in the area.

Officers were told the man also fired at a home on South Ninth Avenue

Officers were also told the man stole a vehicle from a home in the neighborhood. Seely says the man walked into the home and robbed the family of keys to their vehicle. Soon after arriving in the area officers started to follow the man in the stolen car in the downtown area. The suspect then started driving the wrong way on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. and decided to get out of the vehicle at 5th avenue and MLK Blvd. with a shotgun. Seely says when he pointed the shotgun at officers they fired at the suspect while at the same time another officer in a vehicle struck the suspect with his patrol car. The suspect was taken into custody and then transferred to Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital. Police say he was shot in the shoulder but we don't know his condition today.

Two officers are now on administrative leave as the investigation continues

As a result of the shooting two officers, an officer in training and a senior officer have been placed on administrative leave during an investigation of the incident.
Officers from the Yakima Valley Special Investigations Unit will handle the investigation. The unit is made up of investigators from different agencies in the valley.
The suspects name has not been released. No officers were injured.
