Wage increases and a lack of club members participating has led to changes at Yakima VFW Post 379. Post Commander Tim Gatton says a lack of club members attending events and/or simply visiting the local VFW club has forced the club to cut back hours and employees. Gatton says starting April 6 the club will be open Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 2-8 p.m. and Sundays for breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon.
The club will be closed all the other days of the week. Gatton says the local club is facing the same challenges as other clubs around the country. He says while the membership remains strong at 600, very few visit the club on a regular basis.
Gatton says if all the members would stop in the club once a month they would be able to keep the club open full time.
Gatton will be on The Morning News at 7:15 a.m. Friday to talk more about the VFW, membership and the post club.
