It happens ever year and it's back again this year in the city of Yakima. The city streets division is starting its annual chip sealing program on Monday, June 27.
City officials say they'll be doing the work on Nob Hill Boulevard and Washington Avenue between 64th Avenue and 75th Avenue.

Chip sealing is a more affordable way to maintain city streets

As a part of the City’s ongoing street maintenance program, chip sealing is done to protect road surfaces from further damage and to keep them in good condition.
They say chip sealing helps maintain the pavement by delaying aging caused by traffic, water and sun. It also enhances the texture of a road surface and improves skid resistance and seals cracks in the pavement.
City officials say it's simple, chip sealing saves taxpayer dollars because it protects the road from deterioration and greatly delays the need for a new asphalt overlay to repair a deteriorated road.

Heads up drivers you'll want to slow down in the chip seal areas

A city press release says "the City will have flaggers on site to help drivers access their homes and businesses and also assist emergency vehicles through the work areas as needed. There will be intermittent road closures and detours during the project. The chip seal program in these areas is expected to last three to four weeks."
In an attempt to reduce dust and keep crews safe 20-mile-per-hour speed limits will be strictly enforced on the streets where chip sealing is underway.  Access to homes and businesses on the roads to be chip sealed may be restricted for short times while the work is being done.
