Yakima Program Helping Students Caught in Domestic Violence
Domestic violence is a big problem everywhere in the state of Washington including here in Yakima. Yakima police say they answer hundreds of calls every year for people in domestic violence situations. On average police respond to nearly 2,000 incidents every year. That places Yakima within the top five cities in the state for the number of domestic violence incidents.
Helping kids who are traumatized is the aim of the program
Often kids are in the home or are present when a domestic situation breaks out and that can traumatize a child. Police and school officials know that it's why Yakima Police and the Yakima School District partnered earlier in 2021 and started a program called "Handle With Care." officers are now identifying children who are in a home when they respond to a domestic situation. The department then contacts the Yakima School District with the name of the student who may need help. District officials and counselors can then help the student.
The program is already seeing results in the partnership
Police say since the program started they've sent out more than 2,000 notifications to 24 schools in the Yakima School District and helped numerous kids deal with a traumatic situation. The program focuses attention on kids who have been through domestic violence. The enhances primary care the program provides to students includes treatment to prevent problem behavior and future involvement in violence.
Yakima Police say the program is making a meaningful impact on the future of the community.
