Washington Students Must Be Taught Ethnic Studies Courses By 2020
A new list of laws went into effect for Washington state this year and some of them are quite surprising.
One such new law includes the requirement for all public schools to begin teaching K-12 students various Ethnic Studies courses beginning in September 2020. Instruction will be given to encourage students to become "responsible and respectful global citizens" and to learn more about the cultures of the world around them.
An advisory committee of educators from across the state will formulate the new mandatory curriculum to include lessons on African American, Asian Pacific American, and Hispanic cultures.
