Today. Thursday, February 17th is Random Acts of Kindness Day. It doesn't have to cost you anything and it's a proven fact that when you do good for others, in turn, you feel good as well.

Most research on the science behind why kindness makes us feel better has centered around oxytocin. Sometimes called "the love hormone," oxytocin plays a role in forming social bonds and trusting other people

It could be as simple as making a point to smile and acknowledging those around you more. Not just on this day but every day. Everyone is in need of kindness because no matter what someone is portraying on the outside, you really don't know what they are going through on the inside. Leaning towards being kind is always a great habit to adopt.

After attending YVC I flew to Hawaii to continue my education and play sports. One thing I noticed most on my trips back was, the closer I got to home, the fewer people seemed to smile at each other. Even when I made a point to lock eyes and smile, some would turn away, like it was just too much for them. A bummer that they were uncomfortable with connecting, but it didn't stop me. The saying it takes fewer muscles to smile than to frown isn't actually true but there's a truth in the benefits of smiling.

There's been some evidence that forcing a smile can still bring you a boost in your mood and happiness level

Smiles are free and they are contagious so no matter what the response, smile away and brighten someone's day!

The 2020 County Health Rankings values were calculated using mortality counts from the 2016-2018 National Center for Health Statistics. The U.S. Census 2019 American Community Survey and America's Health Rankings Senior Report 2019 data were also used to provide demographics on the senior population of each state and the state's rank on senior health care, respectively.
