Eisenhower High School Drama Director on 'Urinetown'
If you're looking for an entertaining, compelling, hilarious, and thought-provoking musical to enjoy, the IKE PLAYERS have just the show for you. The Broadway smash, Urinetown. Stephen Clark directs the drama department at IKE and tells us that:
Urinetown is a hilarious musical satire about issues ranging from simple problems like human rights to important ones like municipal management. Set in a not-so-distant time and a not-so-distant place, Urinetown tells the story of a world in such a terrible drought that water is strictly regulated by big corporations. In order to use the restroom, all citizens must pay a fee - making the rich richer and the poor more desperate. The poor decide to rise up and stand up for their right to pee for free. Urinetown is like what would happen if The Kids in the Hall became a punk rock band and decided to produce a Golden Age Broadway musical.
Eisenhower High School Drama Kids in Yakima Excited to be On Stage Again
Clark told me that:
We are opening our first musical back almost 2 years to the day that the world shut down. Through masking, vaccinations, and testing, we have been able to ensure consistency and safety for our students in the show. About 80 students are involved in Urinetown and they have been hard at work devoting all of their free time to the show. These kids have worked together to create a tight bond. It's fantastic to see how they look out for each other and really care for the product they are creating. We've been hard at work rebuilding stamina lost to COVID to get us through a two-hour performance without straining muscles or voices.
How Can Students, Parents, and the Community Support and Get Involved?
There are so many to get involved and support the Ike Drama program. The majority of their programming is paid for exclusively by ticket sales and costs are going up so they can always use donations or business sponsorships. Their parent (and community) booster organization is always open and available for supporters to join. If you would like more information on how you can support our program, email clark.stephen@ysd7.org.
