So, Yeah, Twitter Is Not Excited ‘American Idol’ Is Coming Back
Not feeling the American Idol love? You're not alone.
Barely a year after the FOX show came to an end after a wildly successful 15-year run, the pioneering singing competition has been resurrected and will return on ABC.
Idol was a proverbial game-changer. Originally a summer show, it rocketed to the top of the Nielsen ratings and viewers could not get enough of the banter between judges Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul while also having a direct impact on who would win a recording contract.
The show, which made stars out of everyone from Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood to Ryan Seacrest and re-ignited Abdul's career, was a smash for years before ratings slid and critics complained the focus shifted away from the contestants to the rotating panel of judges.
There are still details to work out -- whether Seacrest will return is very high on that list -- but the important thing to remember is it will indeed be a high-profile series to get the revival treatment.
Will American Idol 2.0 be a ratings juggernaut and return as the pop culture force it once was? Only time will tell, but if the Twitter response is any indication, well, the answer is no.
Save for a few folks who seem pleased as punch, the reaction is as ugly as William Hung performing "She Bangs."
