A few weeks ago, Joaquin Phoenix and director Gus Van Sant announced that they were reuniting for a movie once again, this time a biopic about quadriplegic cartoonist John Callahan. It looks like the movie is picking up, because now both Rooney Mara and Jonah Hill are in talks to co-star in the movie, an adaptation of Callahan’s autobiography Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot.

Callahan was a quadriplegic from the age of 21 after a car accident, and made a career out of sketching cartoons dealing with a number of “taboo” topics that he drew with two hands on the pencil. His work was published in The New Yorker, Playboy, and Penthouse, and according to Variety a movie about his life has been in development for a seriously long time since the biography was published in 1989, and the role of Callahan himself was previously being considered by the late Robin Williams.

Here’s the synopsis of the book, which sounds like just the kind of bizarre humor Phoenix and Hill would be suited for:

Is it possible to find humor — corrosive, taboo-shattering, laugh-till-you-cry humor — in the story of a 38-year-old- cartoonist who's both a quadriplegic and a recovering alcoholic? The answer is yes, if the cartoonist is John Callahan — whose infamous work has graced the pages of Omni, Penthouse, and The New Yorker — and if he's telling it in his own words and pictures. But Callahan's uncensored account of his troubled — and sometimes impossible — life is also genuinely inspiring. Without self-pity or self-righteousness, this liberating book tells us how a quadriplegic with a healthy libido has sex, what it's like to live in the exitless maze of the welfare system, where a cartoonist finds his comedy, and how a man with no reason to believe in anything discovers his own brand of faith.

There’s no release date yet for the picture, but if it’s picking up stars like these three, it can’t be long till we get the news.
