Yakima Valley Throwback: Things That Were Cool Back Then
Our listeners are pretty cool. Pretty ‘hip’ if you will, or at least they (and we) used to be. We asked our listening and reading audience from all around the Yakima Valley what was cool when they were younger, but is pretty lame by today’s standards. We have the top answers below.
The Question To Our Yakima Valley Audience
“What’s something that was cool when you were a kid, that’s not so cool anymore?”
When this question was asked of me, my response was pretty fast. Something we collected that was all the rage around 1993 to 1995. My answer… POGS!

Like comic books and trading cards, Pogs were something we collected, traded, and were a type of game (in the same way that Marbles were collectable, decorative, and a game). If you’re too young to remember Pogs, check out this video.
Top Answers To Our ‘Cool’ Question From Our Yakima Valley Audience
The answers we got from our Central Washington audience, were pretty scattered, so we grouped the answers into 3 different categories, and yes, Pogs would fit into #3.
#3 Collectables
Beanie Babies, Polly Pockets, Furby, Non-Game/Sport-related Trading Cards, Cabbage Patch Kids, Garbage Pail Kids, Decorative Plates, McDonald’s Glasses, the list goes on and on. Oh, and yes, POGS!
#2 Electronics/Physical Media
A few people mentioned video games (systems), CDs, and cassette tapes. I don’t think these things ever stopped being cool, especially when you look at the retro market, but I will agree that technology has made it harder to get, and I believe that will bite us in the butt one day. But physical media is on the comeback, look at the popularity of vinyl.
#1 Fashion
Parachute pants, bell bottoms, shoulder pads, elbow patches on suit jackets, to name a few. One answer was very specific.
