California Mystery: The Case of the California Acorn Snatchers
The Very Hungry Caterpillar Woodpeckers
This story is kind of unbelievable: Sonoma County, California pest control workers discovered a huge stash of around 700 POUNDS of acorns hidden behind a wall in a homeowner's house. We have either a pair of very greedy or hungry woodpeckers to blame. This story is currently making national news because the amount of stashed acorns is wild. (We've got 5 pics of the disaster below.)
Were these 2 crazy lovebirds just a couple of California doomsday preppers living off the grid? Unfortunately, the world may never know.

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU THOUGHT ABOUT A WOODPECKER- BE HONEST!
To be honest, I had no idea that woodpeckers loved acorns that badly. I’ve actually never really even given woodpeckers a thought outside of the Roadrunner cartoons I used to watch as a kid.
Looks like Wile E. Coyote should have left a breadcrumb trail of acorns to capture the Roadrunner instead of buying ACME Dynamite in bulk from the Coyote Costco.
HOT TAKE: THE DOOMSDAY PREPPIN' WOODPECKERS WERE ROBBED IN BROAD DAYLIGHT
Blame it all on the Nick's Extreme Pest Control workers who made the executive decision to rob the woodpeckers of their 700 pounds of pot of gold acorns. They said the acorns were covered in insulation and rat turds, which, as you may reason, would be harmful if swallowed by woodpeckers. (Shout out to Fox5 News for their hilarious TikTok interpretation.)
This makes me think of when you find huge stashes money only to wake up and realize it was all just a dang dream. Those poor little woodpeckers. All of that hard work stashing for nothing.
HOW WERE THE 700 POUNDS OF ACORNS DISCOVERED IN THE FIRST PLACE?
The Forestville homeowner had called out the pest control people (a.k.a. The Acorn Snatchers) for inspection to his house. It was supposed to be a routine inspection for the vacation rental home (USA Today/Press Democrat), so the owner must have had some inkling that there were animal creatures living behind the wall in the house. During their inspection, workers cut a hole in one of the walls and pulled out some insulation.
Once they pulled back the insulation, 700 pounds of acorns came pouring out. That is only 300 pounds short of a literal TON. Whoa!
NOW, THIS IS WILD
The 700 pounds of discovered acorns reportedly filled up 8 trash bags!
