When we first met Bumblebee in the Transformers movies he was as Chevy muscle car, a modern, macho upgrade from his toy and cartoon origins. Chevy’s are great and all, but they’ve got nothing on a Volkswagen beetle. Luckily Bumblebee will get to return to his original bug form from the Transformers toys and cartoons in his upcoming solo movie, and today brings our first look.

SlashFilm spotted a set photo shared by a fan on Instagram revealing the first look at Bumblebee’s return to his VW form. The shot has two Bumblebees, one with a camera rig and another parked nearby:

The Bumblebee solo movie will mark the first time the Autobot will be shown in the Transformers live-action movies as a VW bug. The prequel will switch things up a bit by taking us back to the ‘80s and featuring the franchise’s first female lead with Hailee Steinfeld. Based on what we know so far, the solo movie sounds like it has a more kid-friendly angle compared to the previous Transformers films. Here’s the official synopsis:

On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.

Bumblebee hits theaters December 21, 2018.
