MOVE OVER, SPICE GIRLS, MAKE WAY FOR THE YAKIMA VALLEY

Ah, the Yakima Valley! We like it kinda spicy 'round here! Don't believe me, just watch what people sprinkle on their fruit at the next barbecue you go to in the Valley. I can say with some certainty that if there is some kind of fruit or vegetables at the potluck, somebody is going to bust out the Tajin spice, especially if it's summer time.

THE FIRST TIME I EVER HEARD ABOUT TAJIN SPICE

I had never heard of the authentic Mexican spice Tajin until I moved to the Yakima Valley in 2002. I love that it has been a seasoning staple in families for generations. I have watched in wonderment at people putting it on their foods and I have narrowed it down to the five most popular foods you'll see a light dusting of it here.

Top 5 Things Yakima Valley Likes to Put Tajin on It

1.
Corn on the Cob (Elote) with Tajin

The best way to have corn on the cob, in my opinion, is no longer smothered in butter and salt. You have to make it Mexican street corn style by sprinkling on some Tajin along with that buttery spread. Yakima Valley gets bonus points for introducing me to Elote, especially when Tajin and grated parmesan cheese is on top of the corn, too!

2.
Watermelon with Tajin

If only I like to eat raw watermelon; I bet you I would be in heaven putting some Tajin on it like I've seen hundreds of people in the Yakima Valley do. You know how WE do!

3.
Pineapples with Tajin

Pineapples are divine but I admit, I've never tried it with Tajin on it. Can't really say that I would ever want to, to be honest. Maybe one of these hot summer days I'll try it. People in the Yakima Valley love Tajin on their pineapples, melons, and other melon-y fruits!

4.
Alcoholic Drinks with Tajin on the Salt Rim

Mix your margarita salt with a lil' bit of Tajin and then slick those suckers on the rim of your margarita glass. Very tasty and it's the Yakima Valley way!

5.
Shrimp Cocktail Seasoned with Tajin

Spicy Shrimp, anyone? Yes, please, and for me, the spicier the better. You will find plenty of Tajin on shrimp cocktail platters in Yakima Valley restaurants and backyard barbeques!

Enjoy!
