Piles of trash and refuse from homeless camps around Yakima have convinced some local folks to step and organize their own community cleanup. "Somebody's got to do it," Andrew Elkington says.

So he and his friend Dan Butler are planning a volunteer cleanup Saturday (Jan. 26) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. They're taking on the brushy, cluttered area around 40th Avenue and Highway 12 interchange -- just west of 40th.

Anyone who wants to help out should bring a pair of gloves and meet at the Bi-Mart parking lot at 10. All other materials -- including bags, a flatbed truck and free parking -- have already been taken care of, Elkington says.

"We're gonna take charge," he says, adding he plans monthly cleanups from now on. For more details check the event page on Facebook.
