The roadways are clear today, but tumbleweeds caused big problems for drivers on New Year's Eve near West Richland. The Washington State Patrol says some people were even trapped in their cars.

State Route 240 was blocked by the tumbleweeds that closed the route in both directions on New Year's Eve. Some of the piles of tumbleweeds stood 15 to 20 feet high. Department of Transportation officials say they had to use snowplows to clear the road.

On Wednesday, crews found one vehicle in a pile, but no one was inside. No injuries were reported.
