They’re Banned in Yakima But Fireworks Still Cause Problems
If you're 4th of July plans include lighting fireworks make sure you're not lighting the fireworks in the city of Yakima. That's because they're banned within city limits because of concerns about fire and safety.
City officials say the rules are very clear to prevent property damage
Officials from the the Yakima Fire Department reminds everyone that per Yakima Municipal Code 10.15.015, it is illegal to store, sell, possess or discharge fireworks in the City of Yakima. “We encourage community members to celebrate safely this July 4th, and that includes not discharging fireworks in the City,” says Yakima Fire Chief Aaron Markham. “Each year there are a number of fires that result from the use of fireworks.”
Many people ignore the fireworks ban in the city of Yakima
Even though fireworks have been banned for years in the city they cause problems every year. In fact last year Yakima Fire Department Firefighters responded to 27 fires during the 4th of July weekend. They say most were grass fires caused by the use of fireworks. “The fire danger is even a greater concern for this 4th of July holiday,” says Markham. “Due to the unseasonably cooler spring time conditions and above-normal rain fall, the fuel load in the Yakima area is very high for this time of year.”
Public celebrations are planned in the valley like every 4th of July
Fire officials are hoping instead of playing with fireworks that you'll attend a free public fireworks show like the celebration at Yakima's State Fair Park. The fireworks start at 10:00 pm Monday at State Fair Park, 1301 South Fair Avenue. Other public shows are planned in the valley including at Selah's Carlon Park 300 E. Goodlander Road. Fireworks in Selah fire off at 9:00 pm. The other big show is at Clem Senn Field in Sunnyside with fireworks planned for 9:00 pm.
Mabton, Moxee, Granger and Zillah allow the sale fire use of fireworks under specific rules.
