Let's get down to brass tacks: Nicole Kidman's clapping at the 2017 Oscars was completely insane. But why was her applause — as many Twitter users observed — not unlike a seal's? She's finally explained her method.

In an interview with Kyle and Jackie OKidman said that she was wearing 119 carats worth of Harry Winston jewelry during the ceremony and was terrified of somehow destroying it.

“It was really awkward," she said. "I was like, 'I wanna clap, I don’t wanna not be clapping.' That’d be worse, right? Like, 'Why isn’t Nicole clapping?'"

"So therefore I’m clapping but it was really difficult because I had a huge ring on that was not mine — but it was absolutely gorgeous — and I was terrified of damaging it," she added.

There ya have it!

Kidman also saw La La Land mistakenly named the Best Picture winner over Moonlight first-hand, and said the moment initially left her terrified someone had fallen ill and needed emergency attention.

"It was bizarre. I wasn’t sure what was going on. No one in the audience was," she said. "Then there was some shuffling, envelopes — and people rushing onstage. I was like, 'What is going on?'"

"I thought someone wasn’t well," she added. "And then I saw people’s faces dropping. It was bizarre."
