It’s a fair question how Netflix’s upcoming Lost in Space reboot will tackle the source material in a modern serialized context, but the series is at least in good hands. The latest star to join the Lost family Robinson is none other than Deadwood and House of Cards star Molly Parker, playing a very familiar role.

Per TVLine, Parker will naturally take the role of scientist and family matriarch Maureen Robinson (it remains unclear if the series plans to cast anyone outside the core roles of the original series). The original 1965 character was played by June Lockhart, followed by the Mimi Rogers version from the 1998 movie adaptation.

Netflix previously set a 10-episode order for the new one-hour series, eyed for a 2018 debut under Prison Break alum Zack Estrin. Untold team Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless will write the new version, producing Neil Marshall and Marc Helwig of Legendary TV, with Marshall likely to direct. So reads the new synopsis:

Taking its cues from the original series, the show centers around the Robinson family, who is forced to come together in a time of crisis. Stranded light years from their intended destination, they find themselves battling a strange new alien environment and also their own personal demons. Equal parts family drama and sci-fi adventure, it is a survival story for the ages.

The original 1960s series saw 1997 future family the Robinsons heading into space for a 5-year mission, before the evil Dr. Smith sabotaged the mission and sent the family off-course. Crewed by John and Maureen Robinson, their children Penny, Judy and Will, as well as Major Don West, Doctor Smith and “Robot,” the original series aired on CBS for a grand total of 83 episodes over 3 seasons.

In addition to the 1998 film remake with William Hurt, Mimi Rogers, Gary Oldman, Lacey Chabert, Heather Graham and Matt LeBlanc, as well as an early attempt to revive the series as an NBC TV-movie, The WB filmed a 2003 pilot for a new Lost in Space directed by John Woo.

There’s no telling when the full Lost in Space casting might assemble, but what do we make of the cast so far? Listen to the original theme below
