Janet Jackson Fans React to Justin Timberlake as 2018 Super Bowl Headliner
Shortly after it was announced that Justin Timberlake will headline the 2018 Super Bowl halftime show, Janet Jackson fans went on social media to point out the double standard.
Last time Timberlake performed, it was 13 years ago with Janet Jackson, where a "wardrobe malfunction" that resonated around the world took place, and resulted in changes in live TV. Dubbed "nipple gate," Jackson, who at the time was one of the biggest stars on the planet, saw her career take a downward slide following the incident, and critics were quick to point out the double standard in the treatment of Timberlake, a white male, and Jackson.
"This is misogyny and white privilege at work ladies. I’m not worried cause majority isn’t here for it," one Twitter user wrote.
"Did Justin even realize by merely accepting to perform, the name Janet Jackson will be coming up A LOT," another user wrote, before urging the pop star to apologize to Janet, a call that's long been made by fans and culture commentators in the wake of the incident.
As for Timberlake, he hasn't commented about the backlash over Jackson. In an interview yesterday with sports commentator Mike Tirico, he only promised there won't be any more malfunctions.
"That won’t happen this time," Timberlake said. "There was a little bit of that. But…no, Mike, that’s not going to happen.”
