Locals were stunned when they learned that the Salvation Army store in Yakima is permanently closing.

Some who heard the news via the grapevine refused to believe it was true.

"Who told you this?" was the most uttered response I noticed in online comments.

You know how fast the rumor mill can get around here. Gossip spreads faster in Yakima than the flames we see in the hills during wildfire season.

Many Yakima shoppers want to know why the thrift store is closing. The Salvation Army has been in the same building on South 6th Avenue for decades.

A lot of locals say that it's always sad to see yet another business closing in downtown Yakima. It makes some of them wonder if perhaps commercial building landlords are charging too much for office space and that might be chasing small local businesses away.

RUMOR CONTROL

Let's separate the rumors from what has been verified.

RUMOR: Employees were told to not speak publicly about the thrift store closing until Monday of this week.

FACT: This rumor is hearsay since we are hearing it secondhand.

RUMOR: The Salvation Army is permanently closing.

FACT: Yes, the thrift store is closing, but not the Salvation Army itself.

RUMOR: The Salvation Army Thrift Store was the Goodwill's only competition.

FACT: There are several thrift stores in the Yakima area that give the Goodwill some competition:

WHEN IS THE SALVATION ARMY THRIFT STORE'S LAST DAY OF BUSINESS?

We will have to say farewell to the thrift store on November 15th. Expect lots of sales with price mark downs anywhere from 50% to 75% and more for the next few weeks.
