Hazy, Smokey Skies In Yakima Expected to Improve on Saturday
It's usually not this hazy in Eastern and Central Washington this early in the year especially when no big fires are burning in the state. Smoke from fires burning more than 500 miles away in Alberta, Canada is causing hazy conditions over much of the eastern part of the state.
THE FIRST AIR QUALITY ALERT OF THE YEAR
The smoke has caused the Department of Ecology to issue its first air quality alert of the season for eight counties, including Adams, Ferry, and Okanogan.
Meteorologist Laurie Nisbet with the National Weather Service says the smoke isn't expected to linger for too long, however. She says shifting winds are expected to clear skies by the weekend.
THE AIR QUALITY IS IMPACTED IN YAKIMA FRIDAY
In fact the Yakima Regional Clean Air Agency has issued an Air Quality Alert in Yakima through 10:00 am Saturday, May 20. Officials say hazy conditions have been have been growing worse all week.
In Yakima they say particulate matter (PM2.5) levels are will be Moderate to Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups and expected to slowly improve over the next day. A press release says everyone "should take precautions to protect their health."
