The Yakima Police Department took a significant step in honoring its fallen hero Wednesday, breaking ground on the new Law Enforcement Memorial Garden dedicated to Sgt. Joe Deccio.

THE FIRST STEP IN MANY TO DEVELOP THE GARDEN

The groundbreaking marks the beginning of the garden’s development, which will be located on the north side of the Yakima Police Department at 200 South 3rd Street.
Sergeant Joe Deccio tragically lost his life five years ago while performing his duties for the City of Yakima. August 3rd this year commemorates the anniversary, serving as a reminder of his sacrifice and commitment to the community he served.

In a recent press release, the Yakima Police Department described the memorial garden as a “sacred space” that will stand as a lasting tribute to Deccio’s dedication, bravery, and service. The department emphasized that the project is a “collaborative effort” reflecting their ongoing commitment to honoring those who serve and protect.
The memorial garden depends heavily on community support and sponsorship.
