Buy local! Worried about getting some lettuce that didn't make national headlines? See our list of a few places to go. By now, you've probably heard about the diarrhea lettuce, namely, lettuce that has caused cyclosporiasis in victims across 34 states in the U.S., including Washington.

A quick scroll down my social media feed all weekend long kept listing all the grocery stores and restaurants that pulled lettuce off the menus and shelves. It quickly dawned on me that we don't have to forgo eating salads anytime soon; we can buy our leafy farm-to-table fresh greens grown right here by local farmers in the Yakima Valley!

Cyclospora Outbreak Leads to Residents Seeking Local Farms for Salad Greens

Taylor Farms has voluntarily removed all iceberg lettuce products that had been identified by the FDA as the potential cyclospora outbreak source. Their contaminated iceberg lettuce was sold in several popular restaurants like Chipotle and Taco Bell and grocery stores including Whole Foods and local Yakima Valley grocery stores like Target, Walmart, Safeway, Wapato International Market, Fred Meyer, and Wray's Thriftway.

USA Today reported that the farm also provides shredded lettuce to a host of Darden-owned Restaurants.

Where to Buy Local Farm-to-Table Leafy Greens for Your Salads and Meals

Here's where you can buy lettuce that didn't make national headlines: buy some from local farmers. You can also get some at select U-Pick farms and every Sunday at the Downtown Yakima Farmers Market (15 W Yakima Ave at Rotary Marketplace) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. now through October 18th.

Pleasant Hills Farm

This farm located at 180 Pleasant Hills Drive in Gleed, specializes in leafy mixes of greens, microgreens, herbs, fruits, honey, and root vegetables. They do not use pesticides, herbicides or synthetic fertilizers.

Customers can purchase Asian greens, spicy and non spicy leafy mixes, Swiss chard, spinach, kale, and more. Orders can be placed by calling or texting them Thursdays through Saturdays and whatever you put in the car can be delivered or you can pick them up in Yakima at West Park and Westside Church.
