For years the city of Yakima has been working to keep the city clean of trash and old homeless encampments and the effort continues Today. The cities Clean City activities have found and cleaned up a lot of trash and graffiti so far this year. During the first three months 2021 city crews along with community partners cleaned up 1,100 incidents of graffiti, cleared some 30 tons of garbage and removed 300 grocery carts on city streets and on city property.
A press release from the city says Yakima developed the Clean City program in 2019 with key objectives;

Address visual blight (trash, graffiti, dangerous building, abandoned vehicles, etc.)
Address unscheduled collection of waste and litter from the City’s public areas/thoroughfares
Expedite the clean-up of such illegal dumps
Clean up homeless encampments
Support Yakima Police Department officers in unlawful camping enforcement
Provide coordination with neighborhoods for annual clean-up events
Create educational components
Engage with community partners and volunteers
Clean City, under the direction of the City’s Public Works Division, coordinates the efforts of several City departments and community partners. They include:

City of Yakima Public Works:

Public Works Administration
Refuse Division
Streets & Traffic Division
Parks & Recreation Division

Other volunteer groups are also working to clean up areas of the city of Yakima including a large Facebook group that works closely with Camp Hope. Officials at the Yakima Union Gospel Mission have also worked to keep areas along North First Street clean where homeless people have created temporary camps.

State litter crews are slowly getting back to work after suspending work because of the pandemic.
