Beat the Heat? Skydive Naked From an Airplane, Set a World Record
Skydive naked from an aeroplane
Or a lady with a body from outer space
My heart, my heart
Kick start my heart
Motley Crue - "Kickstart My Heart"
I have done two tandem skydive jumps in my life. Both fully clothed. Then there's this guy:
Rian Kanouff, of Omaha, Nebraska, recently set a new world record by completing 60 naked skydiving jumps in 24 hours.
He came up with the idea as a fundraiser for a mental health charity. Rian says, "It's kind of an informal tradition that skydivers complete their 100th jump while naked. My friend that we lost to mental health issues was very close to his 100th jump. He didn't get to make it. So I am out here for him and a lot of other people that we lost."
Skydiving is a very cold and violent hobby. In free fall, you're dropping to Earth on average, at about 200 feet per second. From 10,000 feet, this means you'll be in freefall for approximately 30 seconds. From 14,000 feet, you'll fall for 60 seconds. From 18,000 feet, it's about 90 seconds. The outside temperature at 10,000 feet is about 23 degrees, at 15,000 feet it's 5-and-a-half degrees.
And to go naked? Chafing, I'm sure of it.
The skydiving experience is hard to convey to someone who's never done it. It's an indescribable feeling of flying that is both exhilarating and terrifying at the same time.On both of my jumps, once the ripcord was deployed, two songs came into my head on the float down: Eagles "Peaceful Easy Feeling" and a Red Hot Chili Peppers lyric "..with the birds I'll share this lonely view" from the track "Scar Tissue."
