Participants are tasked with submitting traditional artwork, no photographs or digital images, showing off a Washington grown apple or apples. This contest, at its core, made sure to mention that submissions shouldn't present anything derogatory or negative.

Was this clause always in the contest rules? Or is it an addendum this year to insure that even though some brilliance might come from apple maggot infestation inspiration thanks to Gov. Inslee's visit to our fire-ravaged side of the state last summer, if you want to be in the money, better peel away from that. Also discouraged are slogans or any form of advertising, subtle or blatant.

The contest is open to 9th-12th grade students in Adams, Benton, Chelan, Douglas, Franklin, Grant, Kittitas, Okanogan, Walla Walla and Yakima counties.

First prize is a thousand bucks, $500 for second and $250 for third. In addition to the cash, the top three winner's art class and/or teacher will get to take a bite out of a $150 Amazon gift card for art supplies.

The winner's work will also be featured on a 2022 agricultural science company's poster calendar.
