Don't talk about "The Plaza," for the love of all that is good!
Some people are thrilled about the possibility of The Plaza, but some people will pop a vessel if you bring it up!
A city council or so ago, there was a big push to bring a large plaza in downtown Yakima where the city could host a farmers' market, retail shops, and serve as the central location for community gatherings and events. The biggest gripes residents of Yakima currently have about the plaza idea is that 1) It would demolish the parking lot behind the Yakima Sports Center restaurant & the Olive Garden, which is the main place people know they can park (for free); 2) The taxpayer costs reach up into the millions of millions of dollars.
As of April of this year, the city council is still figuring out ways to get the plaza funded with private donations and city funds. You want to get somebody from Yakima all riled up? Mention the Plaza!

Don't bring up the "Welcome to the Palm Springs of Washington" sign!
Gary Lukehart is the Yakima business owner who has trademarked the phrase he helped put on a billboard off I-82. Just the other day, a new business tried to use part of his phrase and the smoke is finally clearing out about it! Some residents love it, some absolutely hate it. You wanna tick somebody from Yakima? Ask them why is Yakima the "Palm Springs of Washington"?

Don't even get them started about the POTHOLES!
There's enough potholes in Yakima to fill a whole city, and a city full of potholes is what we've got. Just when the county had spent tens of thousands of dollars to get the streets redone, the Winter of 2016 came along and nearly destroyed them all! Booooo!

Don't ask why there isn't a WATER PARK!
When summer comes rolling around to the city streets of Yakima, there's not a better way to beat the heat than to jump in a big ole pool of water! A lot of residents wish there was a major water park in town, especially in that large empty plot of land where the old mill used to be. That would make the perfect spot for a water park--except that the water supply is supposedly tainted. Until then, the kiddos still have access to that splash pad over at Miller Park!

Don't mention particular STORES that refuse to come to Yakima!
There's always someone who chimes in about how they wish there was a WinCo grocery store, Chuck E. Cheese's or a Dave & Busters restaurant in Yakima. There's even a facebook group Bring Trader Joe's To Yakima dedicated to over 5,000 diehard wishful thinkers. Unfortunately, TJ doesn't think Yakima is a city that's big enough to bring in the quality customers they desire. I do declare!

*BONUS PISS 'EM OFF POINTS IF YOU MENTION THIS*
Whatever you do, don't bring up the SEATTLE SUPERSONICS if you don't want to piss off somebody in Yakima. This is still a very sore subject, not just to the people in Yakima, but all over the state of Washington! #RIP.
