10 Most Popular Things People Think of When They Think of Seattle

When you tell people that you live in Washington state, why do they always seem to think we all live in SEATTLE? In fact, I can almost name word for word the 10 most popular things people think of when they think of Seattle. But there is so much more to Washington state than Seattle!

Don't get me wrong, we Washingtonians do love the Emerald City of Seattle and so does the rest of the world. We aren't even mad about it. We do, though, have other AMAZING parts of the state that are worth being one of the first things you think about in Washington state other than Seattle! Sure, Seattle has breathtaking scenic views of homes on a hill, Puget Sound, Pike's Place Market, and more. But we have amazing zoos, world-famous restaurants, famous TV and movie mansions, concert venues and amphitheaters, wineries, breweries, distilleries, and so much more to offer across the state of Washington. Come on, man!

Case in point: Last month when I took a Lyft rideshare to the airport on my way out of Las Vegas, my taxi driver was a Canadian named Paul from Toronto. The following is a re-enactment of our conversation in the car.

PAUL: Where do you live?

ME: Washington state.

P: Oh, Washington? Whereabouts?

M: Yakima. It's in the central part of the state.

P: Is that near Seattle?

M: Well, actually it's about 2 hours from Seattle.

P: Yeah! I just looooove Seattle! The Space Needle! Starbucks! Seattle is GREAT! Do you love living there?

M: But I don't live in Sea--you know what, never mind. Fine. Yeah, Seattle. It's a wonderful place to live.

Although I felt my eyes roll to the back of my head, Paul had a point. When it comes to Washington state, these always seem to be the 10 most popular things people think of when they think of (because Seattle represents all of Washington state, apparently). 😂
