Patti LaBelle, DJ Khaled, Future and More Honored at 2017 BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards

Celebrated artists Patti LaBelle, DJ Khaled, Future and Rihanna were among the honorees at the 2017 BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards, which honors songwriters and producers in the music world. The star-studded event took place at the Woodruff Arts Center’s Symphony Hall in Atlanta on Aug. 31.

Soul icon Patti LaBelle received the coveted BMI Icon Award for her venerable career in music. Ms. LaBelle joins previous “Icon” recipients including Al Green, Snoop Dog, Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, Nile Rodgers and many others.

Elsewhere, DJ Khaled, Future and Rihanna tied for Songwriter of the Year for their various chart-topping hits including, “Do You Mind,” “Wicked” and “Needed Me,” respectively. For the second consecutive year, hitmaker Metro Boomin was named Producer of the Year, while Song of the Year went to “Me, Myself & I” by G-Eazy and Bebe Rexha.

Among the scheduled performers for the BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards, included Big Boi, Rick Ross and rising R&B star Jacquees who performed “B.E.D.” Patti LaBelle was presented with a medley of her hits performed by today’s revered performers. Gospel star BeBe Winans performed on “On My Own,” Avery Sunshine sang “Love, Need and Want You” Tasha Cobbs-Leonard performed “You Are My Friend” and Ledisi delivered a rousing rendition of “Lady Marmalade.” LaBelle herself serenaded attendees with a soaring performance of “Over the Rainbow.”
