Family-Friendly Bike Event Promises Stronger Bonds in Yakima
When was the last time you rode your bike on the Yakima Greenway? The Yakima Police Department is inviting everyone to hop on bikes and join Yakima Police Officers on Saturday during what's being called "Bikes and Badges" Ride-Along.
CONNECTING WITH OTHERS ON YOUR BIKE
Police say it's a family friendly event aimed at building stronger, healthy community connections. The ride, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm is free and will start at the Greenway Foundation Visitor Center. A press release from the Yakima Police Department says the ride will end at the center as well with light refreshments and a time to speak to Officers and other community partners.

ARE YOU CONCERNED ABOUT SAFETY?
Some people have voiced concern about walking or biking along the greenway pathway and police hope to assure people the pathway is safe.
A large fire on August 21 destroyed the large play structure at Rotary Park along the pathway. An investigation continues into the cause but arson is suspected like many other fires at the structure.
NO PLAN TO REBUILD YET
So far there's no published plan to rebuild the structure that was insured against fire.
The Yakima Greenway Foundation Executive Director Konner Hopkins says they have 24 hour security and policies that prevent camping along the pathway. He says the same security, including bike patrols try to prevent fires and other illegal things happening on or near the pathway. Damage from the fire is estimated at least $500,000, the cost of building the facility.
The investigation into the fire continues today.
