Thousands of students are out of class today in Los Angeles as school employees start a three-day strike. The strike has forced the closure of campuses and cancelled classes for some 422,000 students.

The union, which represents 30,000 support employees Los Angeles Unified School District want a 30 percent increase in pay to help support many employees who say they can't afford to live in California.

SCHOOL OFFICIALS TRIED TO AVOID THE STRIKE

The teachers union is asking its members to strike together and not to cross the support workers' picket lines. Officials with the second-largest school district in the country say they tried to avoid the strike working around the clock on Monday but the effort wasn't successful. More than 65,000 employees have walked off the job closing 1,000 schools. The strike hit parents hard with many hoping to find child care after closures were announced Monday night.

NO OFFICIAL ACTIONS YET FROM ANYONE IN STATE GOVERNMENT

No words or actions yet from the new mayor of Los Angeles and Governor Gavin Newsom. According to the https://www.nytimes.com/ Union Local 99 officials say "workers made an average salary of $25,000 a year."
Along with the 30 percent increase in pay the union wants a $2 an hour increase for those who are the lowest paid workers in the union.
