History of the Area
The Yakima Buddhist Church and Gymnasium in Wapato is all that remains
of the once thriving Japanese Community in the Yakima Valley. In the early
1900’s the area once housed The Yakima Valley Japanese Association, The
Japanese Language School, and the Japanese Methodist Church as well as the
Wapato Jodo Shinshu Buddhist Temple serving a Japanese community of
around 1000.
The early Japanese pioneers are credited with developing over
20,000 acres of farmland on the Yakama Reservation; clearing the lands of
sagebrush with teams of horses and helping to dig the early irrigation canals
in the early 1900’s. - Yakima Buddhist Church
