‘Roseanne’ Is Getting the Revival Treatment Because What Show Isn’t?

What’s old is new again. Again.

Roseanne is the latest TV series that will return to the small screen, according to Entertainment Weekly, and will join a legion of beloved shows that are getting a second life.

ABC, which originally aired the series through 1997, announced the news Tuesday (May 16) in a press release. “The Conners’ joys and struggles are as relevant — and hilarious — today as they were then, and there’s really no one better to comment on our modern America than Roseanne,” ABC head Channing Dungey said.

Roseanne 2.0 is expected to premiere sometime next year. Roseanne Barr, John Goodman, Sara Gilbert, Laurie Metcalf, Michael Fishman and original Becky Lecy Goranson are all scheduled to star, while Sarah Chalke, who played Becky later in the show’s original run, will also appear in what Entertainment Weekly calls “an undefined role.”

Roseanne, which won multiple Emmy Awards, ran for nine seasons and was a ratings juggernaut, as audiences embraced the working class, blue collar struggles of the Conner family. It continues to enjoy a strong second life in syndication.

The comedy is another high-profile show to get a revival, joining the likes of Fuller House, The X-FilesGilmore Girls, Will & Grace and American Idol. There has also been talk of Gossip Girl coming back and FOX has reportedly mulled giving How I Met Your Mother another look, all of which begs the question: has Hollywood officially run out of new ideas?
