Baseball has rainouts. And sometimes, so do concerts.

For the first time in anybody's memory, Downtown Summer Nights had to fold up its tents, unplug the electronic equipment and let Mother Nature take center stage as a summer squall settled in and shut down Thursday night's show on North Front Street.

Opening act Dave McGraw and Mandy Fer, coming inland from their off-the-grid island in northwest Washington, barely managed to finish their set -- though they had to pause midway through to give DJs, stage hands and anybody who knew how to operate duct tape a few minutes to cover up the equipment with tarps and tents.

But by the time Seattle's Polyrhythmics took the stage, the weather wouldn't yield the mic. The band managed just one song before safety officials shut down the show to make sure the steady and increasingly heavy rain didn't cause damage or injuries.

The good-natured crowd took it in stride, finishing up tasty eats from Carousel French Cuisine, Flyin' Pig Barbecue, Antojitos Mexicano Restaurant and HopTown Wood Fired Pizza. Some even seemed to savor the evening, milling around afterward to sip a few cold ones in the beverage garden.

Aw, well. That's baseball.

See you next week ... when we hear the weather should be a little July-like for Slings and Arrows and Robbie Walden.
