Quincy Jones Recalls an Issue With T-Pain's Recording Process

T-Pain is sounding off in response to Quincy Jones, who threw some shots at him while sharing details about a studio session for Jones' 2010 album, Q: Soul Bossa Nostra, during a recent interview with Vulture.

Shortly after Jones mentioned T-Pain failed to "pay attention to the details" during the recording session, the rapper shared his sentiments about the incident on his Twitter page. "For the record I told my managers (at the time) and I told @QuincyDJones in his face 'I don’t want to remake any of your past records because I know I’m gonna fuck it up. I’ll never be able to reach the greatest of MJ' it took them hours to pump me up to even go in the booth," T-Pain tweeted.

"And I still hated it when I came out of the booth," he continued. "Then the song came out and it was even worse than it sounded in the studio. This is legit one of the reasons I don’t work with the managers I had anymore because if I said I was uncomfortable doing something they didn’t care."

T-Pain ended his statement by sharing his respect for Jones, but feels he's "pissed off at the whole world. "But also to be real. It just seems like @QuincyDJones is pissed off at the whole world," he wrote. "I have nothing but respect for the guy so I don’t know why we didn’t hold the song or tell me exactly what he wanted when I kept taking the headphones off beggin for direction from the God."

Music legend Quincy Jones has never been one to bite his tongue, so when the veteran producer sat down with Vulture on Wednesday (Feb. 7) for an interview about everything from hip-hop to the Clintons, Jones didn't hold back.

When asked about the last mistake he learned from, Jones pointed to his 2010 album, Q: Soul Bossa Nostra, and his work with T-Pain. According to the producer, he wasn't in favor of doing the project but the rappers involved insisted on creating a tribute for him. Talib Kweli, Ludacris, Three 6 Mafia and LL Cool J are just some of the rappers who took part in the project. T-Pain recorded the track "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)" featuring Robin Thicke for the album.

"I said to them, 'Look, you got to make the music better than we did on the originals,'" he shared. Jones said that never happened and T-Pain was one of the offenders. "T-Pain, man, he didn’t pay attention to the details."

Elsewhere in the interview, Jones was asked about a quote that was attributed to him where he dismissed hip-hop as a "bunch of four-bar loops." The producer stood by his comments, adding, "It's the same phrase over and over and over again." He continued, "The ear has to have the melody groomed for it; you have to keep the ear candy going because the mind turns off when the music doesn’t change. Music is strange that way. You’ve got to keep the ear busy."

Jones is no stranger to making controversial comments about hip-hop, having previously made remarks about Lil Wanye, Kanye West, Puff Daddy, Tupac Shakur and more.

But while Quincy Jones' latest comments may rub some fans the wrong way, he still gave props to a few of hip-hop's biggest names. When asked who's doing good work in music, Jones replied, "Chance The Rapper. Kendrick Lamar. I like where Kendrick's mind is. He's grounded. Chance, too."

That's a win for both Chano and K.Dot.
