Dave Chappelle Receives Key to Washington, D.C. at Alma Mater [VIDEO]

Dave Chappelle returned to the stage where it all started. The veteran funnyman received the key to the city of Washington, D.C., at his alma mater, Duke Ellington School of the Arts, on Friday (Sept. 30).

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser was on hand to honor Chappelle at the high school where he graduated in 1991. Bowser saluted the comedian and actor for his indelible contributions to pop culture and to humanity. “Dave loves Washington, D.C., and we love him right back,” she said.

According to the FOX 5 DC, Chappelle graced the stage and delivered a passionate speech to students before giving the school his Emmy Award he won for hosting Saturday Night Live right after the November 2016 elections.

The 45-year-old entertainer pull up a stool, sat down and delivered words of wisdom to the rapt crowd. “I want you guys to have this,” Chappelle said holding the golden trophy in his hand. “Just so you know that even though the odds are widely against you, this can happen for you if you guys just stay true to yourselves. So this is the people’s Emmy, and every once in a while, just take a look at it and just know I started earning this Emmy at this school.”

Tonight (Sept. 30), Chappelle is closing out his 11-day comedy residency at the city’s Warner Theatre.
