Listen. I know that the DC Cinematic Universe gets a lot of criticism for its dour visuals and themes, but let’s give credit where credit is due: Jason Momoa’s Aquaman is really shaping up like the sleeper hit of the whole endeavor. With a visual aesthetic stolen directly from an episode of Sons of Anarchy  —  and perhaps the most talented director of the Warner Bros. slate behind the camera  —  this is shaping up to be the best movie about people who talk to fish since Disney’s animated adaptation of The Little Mermaid.

Which is why I’m not too worried about a slight hiccup in the release date. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter Friday afternoon, Aquaman will now hit theaters on October 5, 2018. Back in 2014, Warner Bros. announced the full lineup and release dates of the DC Cinematic Universe, with Aquaman originally projected for a July 2018 spot. This means that Aquaman has been bumped back a little bit, but look on the bright side, comic book fans: the new October release date lines up much better with award season! Finally, a chance to right past wrongs and give a dolphin best supporting actor (sorry, Flipper).

Thanks to previous interviews with the cast and crew, we do have a few details about the upcoming film to keep us company for now. James Wan has called his vision for the movie as “a classic sort of swashbuckling action adventure” in the vein of films like Raiders of the Lost Ark or Romancing the Stone, while Willem Dafoe has confirmed that his character of Vulko  — a sort of an underwater King’s Hand, minus the frequent beheadings, probably —  will be introduced in Justice League and take on an expanded role in the standalone Aquaman film. Wan’s work on films like Furious 7 and The Conjuring 2 proves that he’s capable of making big movies with real characters, so goodbye Aquaman, superhero punchline, and hello Aquaman, the only character in Justice League who is truly pulling off his alt-metal look.
